Global carbon dioxide emissions from domestic and international commercial passenger flights were estimated at 70.6 million metric tons (MtCO₂) in June 2024. International flights accounted for 60 percent of this total. Emissions in June 2024 were the highest monthly emissions in the first half of that year. Emissions from commercial flights have been on an upward trend since April 2020, owing to the aviation industry recovering from the impacts of COVID-19. Commercial passenger flight emissions are now back to pre-pandemic levels.
