Over 14 million electric vehicles were sold across the globe in 2023. While this sales volume is expected to increase in the following years, this growth can be affected by a wide array of factors. Sales are projected to be the highest under the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 scenario, which assumes the global energy sector to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Under this scenario, nearly 104 million EVs would be sold in 2035, a staggering 40 million more than under the Stated Policies scenario.
Global electric vehicle sales in 2023, with a forecast for 2030 and 2035 based on three different scenarios
The source defines each model in the following way:
Stated Policies Scenario: "A scenario which reflects current policy settings based on a sector-by-sector and country-by-country assessment of the energy-related policies that are in place as of the end of August 2024, as well as those that are under development. The scenario also takes into account currently planned manufacturing capacities for clean energy technologies."
Announced Pledges Scenario: "A scenario which assumes that all climate commitments made by governments and industries around the world as of the end of August 2024, including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and longer-term net zero targets, as well as targets for access to electricity and clean cooking, will be met in full and on time."
Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario: "A scenario which sets out a pathway for the global energy sector to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. It does not rely on emissions reductions from outside the energy sector to achieve its goals. Universal access to electricity and clean cooking are achieved by 2030. The scenario was updated with the latest available data in 2024."
The regional data provided by the source for 2023, the Stated Policies Scenario, and the Announced Pledges Scenario were aggregated by Statista to obtain the global data.
