By 2050, 793 million heat pumps would need to be installed worldwide to reach a 1.5°C scenario. However, the number of heat pumps that is estimated to be installed if current governments' plans were to be followed is much lower. Geothermal heat pumps were the type of space heating with the least CO2 emissions in the Upper Midwest of the United States.

The planned energy scenario shows the figures that would be reached based on the governments' energy plans. While the 1.5°C scenario shows the figures that would be necessary to reach the goals necessary to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C by the end of the century.
