In a survey conducted in mainland China in late 2023, 30 percent of respondents said that they did not personally know anyone who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ). On the other hand, almost half of respondents said they had at least two LGBTQ friends, family memebers, colleagues or classmates.

Original survey question: "How many family members/friends/colleagues/classmates do you know who belong to LGBTQ group?"
Among survey participants, 48 percent were male and 52 percent were female. Additionally, 89 percent had higher education. 71 percent had more than 7,000 yuan of monthly income. Mean age of the participants was 34.2 years.
