In July 2021, a small coalition of three United States attorneys general sued Google, alleging the Google Play Store favored Google apps on Android devices, as well lamenting that the company was limiting consumer choices and asking high commissions to developers.
The settlement, reached in September 2023 and accepted by a coalition of attorneys general from 50 U.S. states, plus the District of Columbia and the District of Puerto Rico, mandated Google to pay approximately 700 million U.S. dollars. Of these, 629 million would go in restitution to consumers of the Google Play Store who might have over paid for their purchases via the app distribution system between August 2016 and September 2023. In September 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice was considering breaking up Google as an answer to the company's monopolistic behaviors.
