Additional & total contributions to statutory health insurance funds in Germany 2024
Statutory health insurance (SHI) contributions in Germany are made up of the general contribution rate and the individual additional contribution rate. The general contribution rate is the same for all statutory health insurance funds and currently stands at 14.6 percent. The additional contribution rate is set by the health insurance funds themselves and can therefore vary depending on the fund. The contributions of the insured persons are calculated according to the members' income subject to contributions (ยง 226 SGB V) below the so-called contribution assessment ceiling. This is the amount up to which a legally insured person's salary and pension are used for contributions to statutory pension insurance, unemployment insurance, health insurance and long-term care insurance. The portion of income that exceeds the respective contribution assessment ceiling is not considered when calculating contributions. In 2023, the contribution assessment ceiling was just under 5,000 euros. With an additional contribution of 1.2 percent, Techniker Krankenkasse therefore levies a total health insurance contribution of 15.8 percent of the gross contributory income of its policyholders in 2024.
