The combined number of privately-owned single-family and multi-family housing completed between 2010 and 2023 was higher than the number of households formed in the United States. However, there was not enough single-family housing completed for all new households formed. Another issue that can lead to housing shortage is that those buildings are not always located in the place with the highest demand, which can still lead to housing shortages in locations with a high demand.
