In 2023, the carbon footprint of Northvolt NMC battery cells on a cradle-to-gate life cycle basis was projected at 33 kg CO₂e/kWh at full serial production, using internally produced CAM. This was around 67 percent below the carbon footprint of the industry reference cell.
With the use of recycled materials in cell production, the carbon footprint of Northvolt battery cells could be reduced to 22 kg CO₂e/kWh. Northvolt has set the goal of reducing its cell production carbon footprint to 10 kg CO₂e/kWh by 2030.
