The Egyptian capital, Cairo, is the largest agglomeration on the African continent. In 2023, almost 23 million people resided in Greater Cairo (consisting of parts of three governorates). Johannesburg-Pretoria, South Africa, and Lagos, Nigeria, followed, with close to 15.6 million and 14.5 million inhabitants, respectively.
