In 2024, only around 32 percent of adults in the United States said they were familiar with the term "ultra-processed food". Those from high-income households were more likely to report they knew this term than those from lower income households. The consumption of ultra-processed foods such as potato chips, candy, and soft drinks has been linked to an increased risk of a number of health issues including certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. These foods are often cheaper than healthier alternatives.
