International aviation accounted for 0.94 percent of total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023. International aviation's share of global emissions increased from 0.8 percent in 1990 to 1.24 percent in 2019. This was the industry's largest ever share of global emissions. COVID-19-related disruptions to the industry caused aviation's share of GHG emissions to decrease the following year. Although emissions from the industry have rebounded since, aviation's share of total GHG emissions has remained below pre-pandemic levels.
