Global transportation emissions increased by 78 percent between 1990 and 2023. In comparison, emissions from international aviation increased by almost 90 percent during this same period. However, international aviation emissions increased at a faster rate between 1990 and 2019, at 140 percent, compared to 79 percent for the global transportation sector. Emissions from both aviation and transportation as whole were heavily affected in 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, though those from aviation fell notably more.
