Opinions about AI in Spain 2023

In Spain in 2023, opinions on artificial intelligence (AI) were varied. A significant majority, 76 percent, agreed that everything done with AI should be identifiable, while 74 percent felt that AI is evolving faster than society can assimilate. Additionally, 56 percent believed that AI should not be developed further until it is more regulated. However, trust in AI usage was relatively low, with only 32 percent expressing confidence that companies would use AI ethically, and 29 percent trusting that people in general would use AI ethically. 

AI takes the world by storm

AI is definitely the buzzword of recent years. From large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, to AI-powered robots deployed in an increasing number of industries, AI will soon impact most aspects of our everyday lives. In Spain, where significant investments in the technology have been made, the number of AI users is forecast to reach almost 12 million by 2030. 

Will the risks outweigh the benefits?

Despite the enthusiasm generated by AI, some concerns persist, notably those related to employment. In Spain, the adjective most used to describe AI in 2023 was “dangerous”. According to the same survey, nearly 40 percent of the population considered AI risks to outweigh the benefits. Governments around the world will have to take the necessary measures, notably in terms of regulation, to reassure their citizens that their concerns are being addressed.
