In 2024, ChatGPT Assistants API unsurprisingly emerged as the most proficient skill among artificial intelligence (AI) engineers worldwide, reporting an intermediate-level average score of 61 in DevSkiller assessments. This suggests that while AI development is advancing, the overall proficiency of even the top skills might be influenced by the relatively recent surge of interest in AI development. Azure Databricks and AI-code assistant Tabnine both scored 60, respectively. Notably, ethical AI usage scored around 52, reflecting a growing awareness and emphasis on responsible AI practices.
Arrival of AI disrupts IT skills
The advent of AI recently has led companies to rapidly adopt and integrate AI technologies into their business operations. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that AI/machine learning and data analytics were the IT skills expected to see the highest increase in demand globally in 2023, driven by the growing adoption of generative artificial intelligence.
AI penetrates all IT tasks
Using artificial intelligence as a product is not the only application in the tech world. In fact, it has become an integral tool for developers in their daily work. As of 2024, a significant majority of developers, approximately 82 percent, reported actively using AI tools to assist in writing code. This trend extends beyond just coding, with developers leveraging AI technology for searching answers to their queries, debugging, and documenting code among a wide range of applications.

The DevSkiller assessment scale features five proficiency levels for assessing skills by job position. The clean slate (0%) level indicates that the skill has not been rated or assessed. At the basic (≥20%) level, the user has no competence in the area and requires full supervision to complete tasks. Users at the intermediate (≥50%) level can complete standard tasks independently but still need supervision in non-standard scenarios. The advanced (≥70%) level signifies the ability to complete all tasks unassisted, with no supervision required for non-standard situations. Finally, at the expert (100%) level, users can mentor others, create new standards, and continuously grow their expertise in the area.
