In 2023, 14 percent of the physicians surveyed in the United States reported that the process of prior authorization (PA) always delayed access to necessary care for patients, while 41 percent of the respondents experienced this often. Overall, 94 percent of the physicians who took part in the survey reported care delays due to prior authorization. PA is a method used by health plans to limit costs. It requires medical providers to get prior approval from the insurance plan before providing a patient with a prescription drug or other medical treatment that qualifies for payment.
