In 2023, approximately 1.35 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) were removed worldwide from novel CDR techniques. Although CO₂ removals from novel CDR methods have more than doubled since 2020, these techniques account for less than 0.1 percent of total CDR when conventional methods are taken into account.

Novel CDR: All other methods, storing captured carbon in the lithosphere (geological formations), ocean or products. Generally at a TRL below 8–9, these methods are currently deployed at smaller scales. Examples include Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS), biochar and ocean alkalinization.
