As of 2023, there were two approaches used to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) through direct air capture (DAC) technologies. These are Liquid DAC (L-DAC) and Solid DAC (S-DAC), both of which are energy intensive processes. L-DAC required around 6.6 Gj/tCO₂, while S-DAC energy needs were 9.5 Gj/tCO₂.
