In 2022, ischemic stroke cases in South Korea resulted in medical spending of over 1.5 trillion South Korean won. The less-common hemorrhagic strokes caused an expenditure of around 879.5 billion won. When a stroke occurs, poor blood flow to the brain causes cell death, which results in parts of the brain not functioning properly. In the case of ischemic strokes, this is due to a lack of or insufficient blood flow, while in the case of hemorrhagic strokes, it is caused by bleeding within the skull.
