As of December 2024, the average interest rate on ordinary deposits of financial institutions in Japan stood at 0.1 percent per annum. In the past years, the average interest rate on ordinary deposits had been close to zero percent. It rose to 0.02 percent after the central bank policy rate hike in March 2024.

The figures are simple averages of annual interest rates on each deposit as of the 15th of each month (or the next business day in case the 15th is a holiday).
Data is based on financial institutions that hold current accounts at the Bank of Japan. Including domestically licensed banks (excluding such as the Resolution and Collection Corporation), Shinkin banks, and Shoko Chukin Bank.
