China was the ship-owning country with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in 2022, at 102 million metric tons (MtCO₂). Japan followed closely in second place, with emissions of 101 MtCO₂. While emissions from vessels owned by Japan increased by 1.6 percent between 2012 and 2022, those produced by China-owned ships increased by 135 percent. The 10 ship-owning countries with the highest emissions in 2022 produced more than 500 MtCO₂.
