As of August 9, 2024, over 500 deaths due to mpox had been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Furthermore, there were also over 14 thousand suspected and 2.6 thousand confirmed cases in the country. In August 2024, the outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was declared to be a public health emergency of global concern by the World Health Organization due to the discovery of a more severe strain.
