Top medtech companies in Spain 2022, by revenue

The multinational Werfen leads the medical technology market in Spain. With a focus on specialized diagnostics in areas such as transfusions and transplants, the company, founded in Barcelona, generated more than 1.8 billion euros in revenue in 2022. The European and North American markets accounted for two-thirds of the company’s revenue that year.  

Main healthcare players 

While Werfen leads the medtech sector, the broader health industry in Spain sees pharmaceutical companies and retailers at the forefront. Grifols, a Barcelona-based multinational, tops the list of health companies, with over six billion euros in revenue generated in 2022. The company focuses on plasma-derived medication, treating conditions in areas such as immunology, pulmonology, and infectious diseases, and has seen a consistent increase in revenue in recent years.  

The Spanish medtech market  

Revenue of the Spanish medtech market is primarily driven by the medical devices market. Alone, cardiology devices such as pacemakers, and diagnostic imaging devices such as computer tomography (CT) scanners make up over a quarter of the medical devices segment. Other relevant categories include ophthalmic, orthopedic, and endoscopic devices, as well as equipment used for general and plastic surgery.
