In the academic year 2022/2023, Portugal had over 446,000 higher education students. The highest portion attended universities rather than polytechnic institutes, a trend confirmed in all regions of the country where the two options were available. Greater Lisbon was the region with the most students, over 147,000. Of these, 120,000 frequented universities.
