Of all the water on Earth, only around three percent is freshwater. As of 2023, more than two-thirds of the world's freshwater resources were stored in glaciers and polar ice caps. Global record-high temperatures, primarily driven by climate change, are leaving such an important water storage in jeopardy, with glaciers and sea ice melting at an alarming rate.
As of 2023, only one percent of the world's freshwater was available as drinking water.
