In Portugal, the school retention and dropout rate generally decreased during the period considered. In the school year 2012/2013, 19 percent of upper secondary education students were retained or dropped out of school. The same occurred for 13 percent of middle school students. By 2022/2023, the high school retention and dropout rate stood at 10 percent, while the rate for middle school was less than four percent.
