The Middle East was responsible for the largest share of gas flaring CO₂ emissions in 2023, at 31 percent. Iran and Iraq were the two biggest contributors to the region's flaring emissions that year. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was the second-largest source of global flaring emissions in 2023. Russia, the world's largest gas flaring country, accounted for around 90 percent of the region's emissions that year.

These data include flaring from upstream, downstream oil and gas. Emissions have been calculated using flared natural gas volumes based on standard cubic meters (standardized using a Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of 40 MJ/m3) and the standard conversion factor for emissions from the IPCC. Perfect combustion has been assumed.
