Global carbon dioxide emissions from flaring totaled 317 million metric tons (MtCO₂) in 2023, representing a year-on-year increase of seven percent. The biggest contributor to global flaring CO₂ emissions that year was Russia. Since 2010, CO₂ emissions from flaring have risen almost 30 percent.

These data include flaring from upstream, downstream oil and gas. Emissions have been calculated using flared natural gas volumes based on standard cubic meters (standardized using a Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of 40 MJ/m3) and the standard conversion factor for emissions from the IPCC. Perfect combustion has been assumed.
