In 2023, cash accounted for 42.4 percent of payments from individual bank accounts in Japan. Credit cards accounted for the largest share of cashless payments, at 15.6 percent. The share of cashless payments from bank accounts increased to 57.6 percent and was slightly higher from accounts through which individuals received salaries.

Based on bank accounts of individual customers who received salary or bonus payments at least once during the surveyed period. The statistic includes figures of Mizuho Bank, MUFG Bank, Mitsui Sumitomo Banking Corporation, Resona Bank, Saitama Resona Bank, and Japan Post Bank. *Direct debits for the payment of public utility charges (electricity, gas, water, telephone, and NHK). **Pay Easy is a service that enables customers to pay taxes and public utility charges via devices that are connected to the internet, such as PCs and smartphones, etc., or ATMs.
Based on the amount of payments, which reached 286 trillion Japanese yen in 2023.
