Global black carbon emissions from shipping totaled 82,624 in 2022. This represents an increase of 80 percent compared to 1990 levels. Black carbon, also known as ''soot'', is created through the partial combustion of diesel, coal, or other biomass. This short-lived climate pollutant contributes to atmospheric warming and has been linked to increased rates of ice melt in the Arctic.
