In 2022, recycling innovation expenditure in Germany totaled around 400 million euros. This was a decrease compared to the previous year.

The innovation expenditure for this sector given in the ZEW report includes research and development as well as innovation-related expenditure on tangible and intangible assets, training, marketing, conception, construction, design and production and sales preparation.

According to the source, the German Innovation Survey has been conducted on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW, Mannheim) in cooperation with infas (Institute for Applied Social Sciences) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) since 1993. The survey is aimed at all companies in Germany with at least 5 employees and an economic focus in the listed industry groups. The definitions and measurement concepts correspond to the international standards of the OECD and Eurostat. The innovation survey is part of the Europe-wide innovation survey (Community Innovation Survey - CIS) coordinated by Eurostat every two years. All values are extrapolated to the population of companies with 5 or more employees in Germany.

* Around 15,500 companies took part in the 2023 innovation survey (= 50% of the sample size), including 365 from the waste management and recycling industry.
