As of January 2024, Arab Israelis identified most with their religion as an important element of their identity. In the same survey, the second most central identity element was the Arab identity. Between March and October 2023, Arab citizens of Israel were 18 percent less likely to report their Palestinian identity as important. Conversely, the Israeli identity became slightly more prominent among respondents. This shift was likely attributed to the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, and its impact on Arab-Israeli society.
Trends in the national, ethnic and religious identities of Arabs citizens in Israel from March 2023 to January 2024
Arab Israeli respondents were asked to rate the extent to which they agree with the following statement: 'Being Arab, Palestinian, Israeli, Muslim, Christian, or Druze is an important element of my identity. Rate on a scale of one to six: one = not at all; six = to a great extent.'
Data is based on a series of surveys conducted by the source. The October 2023 survey was conducted after the start of the Israel-Hamas war. The final survey was held between January 1 to 18, 2024. It included 503 Arab respondents and was weighted in proportion to the national population.
