Globally, the deployment of solar PV over the five-year period from 2019 to 2023 avoids around 1.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) annually. The largest emission reductions from solar PV occurs in China, where capacity additions since 2019 avoid more than 600 MtCO₂ annually.
Wind power deployment contributes the second-largest emissions reductions of these clean energy technologies, with annual avoided emissions of 830 MtCO₂ annually since 2019. Avoided emissions from electric car and heat pump deployment are considerably lower than other clean energy technologies, at 61 and 51 MtCO₂ since 2019, respectively. However, both are likely to experience increased emission reductions in the coming years as deployment grows.
