Approximately 35 million electric cars were sold worldwide from 2019 to 2023. In total, around 60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) is avoided annually because of the deployment of electric cars since 2019, owing to the reduced demand for fossil fuels. China is the largest contributor to electric car-related emission reductions, with 22 MtCO₂ avoided annually over the five-year period from 2019 to 2023. In 2023, global electric car sales increased by 35 percent year-on-year.
