Share of teachers with a temporary contract in Italy, 2015-2023

In the school year 2022/2023, almost one fourth of Italian teachers had a temporary contract. As a consequence, they lost their jobs at the end of the school year, in June, and were forced to undergo a new recruiting procedure before the start of the next school year in September. The phenomenon aggravated over the time, as in the school year 2015/2016 only twelve percent of the teaching staff had not a permanent contract, while after 2020 figures went above 20 percent. This causes evident problems for pupils and students, who may begin the school year without a teacher, as many of them are appointed only after the lessons' official start.
