ASEAN: views on China's economic influence by country 2024

In a survey conducted in ten Southeast Asian countries in 2024, the majority of respondents from several countries in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) were worried about the growing economic influence of China in the region. This answer was particularly common in Vietnam, as it was chosen by 87.7 percent of the country's survey participants. In contrast, the majority of respondents from Brunei, Malaysia, and especially Indonesia were welcoming the growing economic influence of China in the region.

Respondents included those who previously answered "China" in response to a question about which country or regional organization is currently the most influential economic power in Southeast Asia.

ASEAN stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations and is a political and economic union composed of the ten member states Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
