In 2023, voluntary carbon market (VCM) credit prices from removal projects averaged 15.91 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent. This was some three times higher than prices from reduction projects.
Reductions credits are through projects such as energy efficiency, the substitution of fossil fuels for renewable energy, or avoided degradation or destruction of natural carbon sinks such as forests. Removals, on the other hand, are generated through nature-based methodologies, including Afforestation-Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR), or engineered solutions, including direct air capture. Some projects include both carbon removals and reductions.
