On June 30, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that presidents have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts falling within their exclusive sphere of constitutional authority.
Many Americans are concerned about the lack of accountability due to the ambiguity of what is considered official or unofficial acts. A follow-up poll found that 42 percent of those surveyed agreed that the ruling will make future presidents more likely to commit offenses. Of these, 67 percent were Democrats, compared to 16 percent of Republicans.
