As of March 31, 2023, there were around 33.27 thousand welfare taxis with improved accessibility available in Japan, an increase from roughly 29.66 thousand in the previous year. The government announced its aim to have around 90 thousand taxis with improved accessibility by the end of fiscal 2025.

The MLIT refers with the term "universal design taxi" to taxis that are wheelchair accessible and have transfer aids, such as rotating seats and the like. Such vehicles are designed to be easily usable by anybody.
