Petrol sport-utility vehicles had the highest fuel combustion emissions, at an average of some 55.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emitted during a petrol SUV's lifetime. This propulsion type also had the highest energy production emissions, followed by battery-electric SUVs.
Estimated global lifetime emissions of sport-utility vehicles by propulsion and type, as of June 2024
The metrics provided here are based on the following assumptions:
A vehicle lifetime of 15 years with an average mileage of 42 kilometers per day.
Petrol SUVs are assumed to consume on average 10.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
Petrol PHEVs are assumed to consume on average 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers and use battery power for 30 percent of all kilometers traveled.
Diesel SUVs are assumed to consume on average 8.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
Diesel PHEVs are assumed to consume on average 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers and use battery power for 30 percent of all kilometers traveled.
BEVs are assumed to have an average power consumption of 22.1 kilowatts per 100 kilometers, a driving range of 300 kilometers, and no battery-replacements.
The energy supply was modelled by the source based on their Stated Policies Scenario, based on a detailed review of the current policy landscape.
The energy supply mix assumed a biofuel blending (ethanol/gasoline) share of 4.6 percent for petrol and five percent for diesel.
