In New Zealand, the net international investment position (IIP) stood at around negative 200 million NZ dollars, as of March 2024. This is up from the previous March, where the IIP was around negative 166 million NZ dollars. 

Is New Zealand an attractive nation for foreign investment?

Though a small nation, New Zealand still attracts a large amount of foreign investment. In 2023, there were over seven billion New Zealand dollars’ worth of foreign portfolio investments in New Zealand, with some years recording an even higher value of investments. These portfolio investments are made from countries across the globe, from regional neighbors such as Australia and Singapore, to truly international nations like the United States and Switzerland. 

Greenfield investments are growing

New Zealand has become a good country to begin new operations for companies. In 2022, there were 77 new Greenfield investments started in New Zealand, a number which has been slowly rising over the years. The value of these Greenfield investments in New Zealand can vary, with 2022 seeing around 2.5 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of new ventures invested, down from roughly 7.5 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of investments in the previous year.
