As of October 2023, there were 184 countries with methane included in their latest Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Meanwhile, the number of countries integrating a separate methane target or mitigation potential in their NDCs has more than quadrupled since 2020, to 40.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential far greater than carbon dioxide. According to experts, human-caused methane emissions are responsible for around one-third of net global warming since the Industrial Revolution.
