According to a survey conducted in Japan in November 2023, 9.2 percent of boys and 5.9 percent of girls aged 15 to 19 years old regarded VTubers as a hobby. The survey showed that the share of VTuber fans was highest among the youngest age groups. The word "VTuber," a short form for "virtual YouTuber," refers to video content creators that use computer-generated avatars. The term was coined by the Japanese VTuber Kizuna Ai and has also been used for similar content creators of other video platforms.
