Global changes in air pollutant emissions 1990-2022, by type
Global emissions of sulfur dioxide decreased by roughly 46 percent between 1990 and 2022. In comparison, emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) were roughly the same in both years. Both these pollutants are commonly formed when fossil fuels are combusted in sources like road transportation and power plants. They are harmful air pollutants that can damage the human respiratory system.
