Aluminum was the leading critical mineral in the United States in 2023 based on apparent consumption volume. At 1.8 million metric tons, U.S. aluminum consumption was nearly twice as much as the second leading critical mineral based on consumption, which was zinc at 970,000 metric tons that year.
