In 2022, magnesium oxide had the largest reserve volume of any critical mineral in the United States, at 35 million metric tons. That year, zinc was the second leading critical mineral in the U.S. based on reserves, at 6.6 million metric tons. Critical minerals are essential for the transition to a lower carbon energy system. Consequently, critical minerals have become essential to the growth and technological development of the U.S.
