The global direct carbon price averaged 23.2 U.S. dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (USD/tCO₂e) in 2023. For carbon pricing mechanisms to limit global warming to at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, average carbon prices will need to rise to at least 170 USD/tCO₂e by 2030 and at least 290 USD/tCO₂e by mid-century.
Weighted average direct carbon price targets worldwide to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius from 2023 to 2050
(in U.S. dollars per metric ton of CO₂ equivalent)
Data was calculated by taking the weighted average of prices based on the percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions covered by each carbon price for each year. Data includes regional and subnational carbon prices, some of which overlap with national systems. For these overlaps, emissions are attributed to the carbon pricing initiative that was introduced first.
