In 2019, the region with the highest prevalence of anemia among pregnant women was Africa, followed by South Asia. In Africa, around 44 percent of pregnant women were thought to suffer from anemia at that time. This was a decrease however from a prevalence of 49 percent in the year 2000. Iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women can increase the risk of premature birth and low birth weight among infants. This statistic shows the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women aged 15 to 49 years worldwide from 2000 to 2019, by region.
