Bioenergy capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean by type 2023
In 2023, bagasse was the leading bioenergy source in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a capacity of 17.3 gigawatts. This fibrous byproduct of crushed sugarcane stalks is extensively used in the region for electricity generation, bioethanol production, and the creation of biomass pellets and briquettes. In comparison, biogas had a bioenergy capacity of 823 megawatts; renewable municipal waste 154 megawatts, and liquid biofuels 18 megawatts.
