For almost half of the Italians, the worst form of political corruption is making agreements with mafia associations. In fact, at the beginning of the 1990s, several politicians were reported to closely negotiating with Cosa Nostra members, with the purpose of granting favors to the criminals in exchange for ending terrorist attacks against the state and the judiciary. Additionally, 24 percent of the respondents consider the most unacceptable case of corruption the payment of bribes for obtaining tenders and other advantages. The Corruption Perceptions Index for Italy recorded an increasing trend since 2012.
