An estimated 175 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) were emitted in the first two years of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The majority of emissions produced during the first 24 months of the war originated in Ukraine, with 36 percent coming from occupied territories, and 27 percent coming from areas under the Ukrainian government's control. These emissions were mainly caused by warfare and landscape fires.
